In case you missed it, 45-year-old Venus Williams won a professional tennis match Tuesday night at the DC Open. Her opponent, Peyton Stearns, was 22 years her junior (!). Venus won four Grand Slam titles before Stearns was born.
It was Venus’s first win in two years, and her first time on a WTA court in nearly 17 months. At age 45, she’s now the second-oldest woman to win a tour-level singles match.2 Finally, a story about a tennis wildcard that doesn’t make your skin crawl.
After the match, Venus joked about the real reason she came back. It’s a good joke!
