Can this NCAA walk-on please score one measly point?
Plus: Alexander Ovechkin the memorabilia tsar, Stephen A.'s ESPN bag, and a sportswashing deal that surprised even me.
Welcome back to Club Sportico, where we break down the intersection of sports and money—with an extra bit of humor and opinion. Here’s a six-pack of items to start the weekend.
The Sportico Story of the Week 🥅: Last week I declared the Ovi watch officially ON. This week, our colleague Eric Jackson wrote a great story about Alexander Ovechkin’s memorabilia stash.
In 2016, Wayne Gretzky told Ovechkin to start saving items from his career. Ovi took it to heart, and now has hundreds of pucks and sticks from his goals over the last few years, plus items from a boatload of opponents. The record-tying and record-breaking pucks? Yeah, they’ll go to Ovi too. But I can’t stop thinking about this quotation from teammate Pierre-Luc Dubois.
The Non-Sportico Story of the Week ⚾️: This MLB season will feature two teams playing in minor league stadiums—the Athletics in Sacramento and the Rays in Tampa. ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote the story I wish I had, breaking down the sport’s broken economics, growing resistance to public subsidies, and a labor battle looming in the distance.
What Made Me Laugh 🤡: Brandon Dwyer played just seven total minutes for the FGCU men’s basketball team this year, but he’s likely one of the most famous walk-ons in the country. That’s because he’s been documenting his “Road to 1 Point” on TikTok and Instagram, where he has amassed more than 1.8 million followers.
His season ended this week with—sadly—0 points. Club Sportico is hoping he snaps the drought next year in his final year of eligibility, but in the meantime, here are all of his recent attempts. Follow your shot young man! 👇
